Greenland’s Bureau of Mining And Petroleum’s (BMP) New Rules of Small Scale Mining
If you go to the BMP’s website, you will see that all their rules and policies are published in English—except the rules that govern small scale mining.
Several people, including myself, requested that BMP translate this document into English. Initially, the BMP refused to do so, citing costs.
However, due to international pressure, the BMP agreed to post translations of their rules that thwart small gemstone miners in Greenland.
They’re now two (2) weeks behind their own stated deadline for translation of these new rules.
Because it could be months before the BMP follows through with their promised translations, the 16th August Union was able to obtain their own translation. The 16th August Union is working closely with activists in the international community that supports ethical gemstones and fair trade small scale mining.
Fairjewelry.org now posts for the first time the new rules, as translated by Dr. Christian Schoenberg of Nordic Legal Language Services.
Dr. Schoenberg is just one of many people internationally who support the Inuit’s rights. Dr. Schoenberg is among the best diplomatic and legal translators of Dansk – English in the world today. He did this work pro-bono to support the Inuit’s rights.
Our special thanks to Dr. Schoenberg for his efforts in the support of common justice.
As Barack Obama said on 20 January 2009
“To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history.”
