South Africa Fair Trade Jewelry Stakeholders Conference to be held July 15, 2007 at Jewellex International Trade Fair
July 9, 2007-Johannesburg —
The Rapaport Group in coordination with The Jewellery Council of South Africa will present South Africa’s first Fair Trade Jewelry Conference on Sunday July 15, from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM. The event is the first of its kind to bring together South African stakeholders interested in the development of South African Fair Trade Jewelry and follows-up on the Fair Trade Jewelry Conference held this past June at the renowned JCK Las Vegas Jewelry Show.
All of South Africa’s government sponsored jewelry development and training groups will be participating in the conference including elected representatives from Vukani-Ubuntu, Harmony Jewellery School, Imfundiso Skills Development, Kgabane, CEDA Platinum Incubator group (Djadji) and Alan Mair CEO of SA Manufacturing Jewellers.
Special presentations will be made by Martin Rapaport, chairman of the Rapaport Group, Lourens Maré, CEO of the Jewellery Council of South Africa, and Demos Takoulas, CEO and founder of the Vukani-Ubuntu development group.
“This conference is the first step in the development of South Africa’s Fair Trade Jewelry sector. Fair Trade Jewelry can and will play a significant role in improving the lives of South Africa’s historically disadvantaged individuals and communities as it creates vital jobs opportunities through sustainable economic development. This is a historic event as it brings together for the first time organizations and cooperatives capable of producing commercially viable fair trade jewelry,” said Martin Rapaport, chairman of the Rapaport Group.
“The Jewelry Council of South Africa believes that the development of South African Fair Trade Jewelry will provide much needed jobs and opportunities. We are pleased to participate in the initiative in co-operation with the Rapaport Group, SA Manufacturing Jewellers and the CEDA Platinum Incubator Group,” said Lourens Maré, CEO of the Jewellery Council of South Africa.
The conference is open to all.
