Dirty Gold From Alaska: Coeur d’Alene Mines Corp Permitted By US Supreme Court To Dump Toxic Waste from Gold Mine Into Pristine Mountain Lake
MSN reports in an article published on June 22nd reports that the court will allow toxic tailings from the Kensington Gold Mine near Juneau, Alaska to be legally dumped in a lake below Lion’s Head Mountain,
The waste is expected to kill all the fish in the lake and pollute the local water tables.
Earthjustice President Trip Van Noppen said in a statement, “If a mining company can turn Lower Slate Lake in Alaska into a lifeless waste dump, other polluters with solids in their waste water can potentially do the same to any water body in America.”
Of course, if we had transparency in the jewelry sector around gold sourcing, no one would have to worry about this gold ending up as a wedding ring.
