Digging to Deliver Development
The Communities and Small-Scale Mining (CASM) Secretariat would officially like to invite you to participate in the Eighth Annual CASM Conference to be held in Brasilia, Brazil from October 6-12, 2008. The Brazilian Government will be co-hosting the event through the Secretariat of Geology, Mines and Metallurgy at the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
The meeting will build on the momentum of past meetings and current initiatives of CASM and other organizations and individuals to develop short and long term strategies for maximizing the development potential of Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) and for dealing constructively with the social, environmental, political, economic and technical challenges which these activities produce.
The conference will be organized as follows: For the first two days (October 6 and 7), we have arranged a diverse selection of pre conference working groups around key themes to meet the demand for more time for the conference overall, and for more interactive sessions in particular. These will function in parallel, four per day to give a good range of options for participants. The opening plenary session and the main body of the conference will run from the 8th October through to mid day on the 10th. This will comprise plenary papers, presentations from partners, not least a whole afternoon dedicated to the experiences of our hosts, Brazil, and reports back on achievements and recommendations made during the eight pre conference workshops. The conference will officially end on October 10, but field visits will also be available for participants on the 11th and 12th of October for interested participants.
