An Open Letter from Artesanas Campesinas to the Fair Trade Federation

Dear Mrs. Patricia Pearson President of the Board of the Fair Trade Federation,
Artcamp was an original member of the Fair Trade Federation and faithful supplier of Fair Trade stores for 20+ years. We respectfully request the Fair Trade Federation to return our rightful place to us, as the Fair Trade movement has been formally dedicated to the good of Third World artisans, and with our economic aspirations.
Our parents and grandparents were traditional artisans and we want to follow in their footsteps and to have our children become artisans and not migrate to the united states.
On December 17th 2017, Artcamp’s President Ofelia Estrada presented invoices showing a modest per-piece price rise, (This was after 8 full years without a piece-rate price raise.)
Within a matter of hours, Kevin Ward of Global Crafts suspended communications with Artcamp, effecting the exclusion of the Artcamp cooperative from the Fair Trade network.
No discussion or negotiation regarding the proposed per-piece price of our jewelry ensued; in his last message, Kevin informed that he had ordered Google to reject all Artcamp mails.
Global Crafts’ entire disregard of the venerated Ten Fair Trade Principles surprised us. Fair Trade Principle #1 “Members place the interests of producers and their communities as the primary concern of their enterprise.” Fair Trade Principle #2 Fair Trade Principle #3 Fair Trade Principle #5 Fair Trade Principle #9
For nine years, Artcamp members were tireless, reliable, loyal and faithful workers, producing quality creations with skilled hand labor, all for the benefit of Global Crafts. According to the G-MAIL record, Global Crafts received from Artcamp a nearly perfect customer service.

Over a period of 2000-2018, Global Crafts has sold more than a million dollars of Artcamp jewelry, having acquired some 155,000+ pieces / pairs of production.
There were NO problems or complaints whatsoever expressed by Global Crafts. In their mails they repeatedly mentioned their satisfaction with customer service which they had received from Artcamp’s competent administrator, Mrs. Estrada.
Your question of December 28, 2019:
“I have continued with Renice, the former owner of Global Crafts. Renice provided accounting documentation for 2018, which demonstrates that they have paid for all products that were ordered and received, including samples.”
Mrs. Patricia, these are confusions we wish to make clear, with a mutually respectful dialogue. To whom was this accounting documentation sent by Renice? I have only seen an Excel spreadsheet mailed by Renice Jones to Paula Perez, but NOT to the cooperative office. Renice informed Paula that Artcamp owes her 2000 dollars. One can not possibly assess the reasoning for this assertion, since Renice’s spreadsheet is not connected to any other.
Your questions of December 29, 2019
“I understand that you claim that Global Crafts, under the ownership of Kevin Ward and Renice Jones, did not pay Artcamp for the samples and abruptly suspended the relationship. Are you able to provide proof of this?”
Yes, of course we can provide such evidence (it is not our intention to disrespect anyone, our hope and intention is to repair the confusion), if you will give us the opportunity for an open dialogue, we would like to reconcile and undo the damage to our hopeful communal initiative, an effort that has long been an important source of income for the artisan families.
Do you have an invoice for the samples and the amount that was not paid?
Artisans and silversmiths never make original-models for sale, we make them to please the customer, in anticipation of receiving a production order. Making original model series’ for the customer is an act of good faith on the part of the artisan. We expect to be paid in production orders, so we are able to continue our jewelry-making work, humbly earning our livelihoods.
Where should we present the proof of the several unique original-models we created, in response to, and according to the express orders and instructions of Global Crafts?
What other questions do you have, please? I welcome the opportunity to address them.
Our cooperative has requested an accounting (accounting is precisely to compare the differences and see what is the actual situation) and a clear dialogue that what will leave both parties satisfied, because this is not about fighting, it is about fixing the differences. In Taxco, it is customary that ordinary business problems are resolved with such dialog.

Please, can we talk? Artisans who engendered the profitability of Global Crafts continue to suffer without income, because of the arbitrary exclusion from the USA Fair Trade network.
We respectfully request recognition of Artcamp as a founder and a loyal collaborator of Fair Trade since 1995; to be welcomed back to our rightful place in the Fair Trade network, in order to fulfill our sincere commitment to Fair Trade’s high ideals, without recriminations.
We hope Artcamp to be protagonist of a new Fair Trade, a Fair Trade which includes the peasant artisans as an unquestionable seal of the veracity of the claims of Fair Trade.
The latest Global Craft order remains here intact, after almost two years, because we have stubbornly requested an accounting balance to resolve the pending differences and doubts caused by the sudden and surprising suspension of business relationships with our principle client. We had been unfairly accused in writing by Mr. Kevin Ward of Global Crafts of many things including theft and extortion and of having bad or corrupt intentions, therefore we kept their order intact, as the way to prove our innocence. In this letter sent January 18, 2018 to the Fair Trade Federation, we express an aspiration for an opportunity to regain access to the market, that our creative hand labor be rewarded; in return, we will happily publicly certify the humanitarian efforts of FTF merchant members, those who accept us as loving sisters and contributors to a strengthened Fair Trade brand.

Estimada Sra. Patricia Pearson Presidenta de la Junta de la Federación de Comercio Justo,
Artcamp fue uno de los miembros originales de la Federación de Comercio Justo y ha sido un fiel proveedor de tiendas de Comercio Justo durante 20+ años. Respetuosamente solicitamos que la Federación de Comercio Justo nos dé nuestro lugar, ya que el movimiento de Comercio Justo es identificado con los artesanos del Tercer Mundo y sus legítimas aspiraciones económicas.
Nuestros padres y abuelos eran artesanos tradicionales y queremos seguir sus pasos y queremos que nuestros hijos se conviertan en artesanos y no emigren a los Estados Unidos.
El 17 de diciembre de 2017, la presidenta de Artcamp, Ofelia Estrada, presentó facturas reflejando un modesto aumento de precio por pieza (después de ocho años completos sin aumento de precio por pieza).
En cuestión de horas, Kevin Ward, de Global Crafts, suspendió todas comunicaciones con Artcamp,
lo que provocó la exclusión de la cooperativa Artcamp de la red de Comercio Justo.
No hubo discusión ni negociación sobre el precio propuesto por pieza de nuestras joyería; en su último mensaje, Kevin informó que había ordenado a Google que rechaza todos los correos de Artcamp.
Durante diez años, los miembros de Artcamp eran trabajadores incansables, confiables, leales y fieles, produciendo creaciones de calidad con mano de obra calificada y para el beneficio de Global Crafts. Según el registro de GMAIL, Global Crafts recibió de Artcamp, un servicio al cliente casi perfecto.

Sra. Patricia, estas son confusiones que queremos dejar en claro, con un diálogo de respeto mutuo. ¿A quién fue enviada esta documentación contable por Renice? Solo he visto una hoja de cálculo Excel enviada por Renice Jones a Paula Pérez, pero NO a la oficina cooperativa. Renice le informó a Paula que Artcamp le debe 2000 dólares. Uno no puede evaluar El razonamiento para esta afirmación, ya que la hoja de cálculo de Renice no está conectada a ninguna otra.

Sí, por supuesto que podemos proporcionar dicha evidencia, (no es nuestra intención avergonzar a nadie, sino de reparar esta confusión), si nos dé la oportunidad de un diálogo abierto, nos gustaría hablar con ellos para reconciliar y resarcir el daño a nuestra iniciativa comunitaria esperanzada, que durante mucho tiempo ha sido una fuente indispensable de ingresos para las familias artesanales.
“¿Tiene una factura por las muestras y la cantidad que no se pagó?”
Los artesanos y plateros no hacemos modelos originales para venderlos, sino los hacemos para complacer al cliente y con la esperanza de recibir un pedido de producción. Hacer unas series de modelos originales para el cliente es un acto de buena fe por parte del artesano Esperamos que se nos pague en pedidos de producción, por lo que podemos continuar nuestro trabajo humilde de fabricación de joyería. ¿Dónde deberíamos presentar la prueba de los modelos originales únicos que creamos, de acuerdo con las instrucciones expresas de Global Crafts?

Nuestra cooperativa ha solicitado una contabilidad (la contabilidad es precisamente para comparar las diferencias y ver cuál es la situación comercial actual) y un diálogo claro es conveniente para satisfacer a ambas partes, no se trata de pelear, sino se trata de arreglar las diferencias.
Es habitual en Taxco que los problemas comerciales ordinarios se resuelvan de esta manera.

Por favor, ¿podemos hablar? Los artesanos que produjeron la rentabilidad de Global Crafts continúan sufriendo, sin ingresos, como resultado de la exclusión arbitraria de la red de Comercio Justo de EE. UU. Respetuosamente solicitamos el reconocimiento de Artcamp como un fundador y colaborador leal de Comercio Justo desde 1995; y ser bienvenidos a regresar sin recriminaciones, a nuestro lugar legítimo en la red de Comercio Justo, para poder cumplir con nuestro compromiso con los altos ideales del Comercio Justo. Esperamos que Artcamp sea protagonista de un nuevo Comercio Justo, que incluye las artesanas campesinas como sello indudable de la veracidad de las afirmaciones de Justo Comercio.
El último pedido de Global Craft sigue aquí intacto, después de casi dos años, porque solicitamos obstinadamente ver un saldo contable para resolver las diferencias y dudas pendientes causadas por la repentina y sorprendente suspensión de las relaciones comerciales con nuestro principal cliente.
Mira aquí la joyería en cuestión. Debido a que Kevin Ward nos había acusado de robo, extorsión y malas intenciones, conservamos este pedido completo, como la forma de demostrar nuestra inocencia.
